Want the Power Company to Start Paying You?Authored by Bret Biggart

Imagine if, instead of sending monthly payments to your utility company, you could receive money from them instead.

This is the concept behind virtual power plants (VPPs), an innovative energy solution designed to safeguard against extreme weather, reduce energy costs, strengthen the power grid, and enable rooftop solar owners to become power generators.

At Freedom Solar, we are assisting customers in enrolling in Tesla Electric’s groundbreaking VPP program. Interested? Read on!

What Are Virtual Power Plants?

Think of a virtual power plant as your own mini power grid at home.

Unlike traditional power plants that produce large quantities of electricity and transmit it across long distances to serve numerous homes and businesses, VPPs generate energy through rooftop solar panels and store it on-site using battery systems like Tesla Powerwalls. Advanced technologies and smart devices further optimize your energy consumption.

These systems allow you to produce the energy you need during the day, and store any excess for use later when the sun sets, thereby lowering your electricity bills and providing backup power during outages.

With your consent, and under specific conditions, any surplus electricity you generate or store can be sold back to the grid, allowing you to earn money in the process.

This innovative technology is reshaping the way energy is produced and distributed while creating a smarter, stronger, and more sustainable power grid. It also fundamentally alters how individuals engage with their electricity supply.

At Freedom Solar Power, we are committed to empowering people to take charge of their energy future, and VPPs play a significant role in that mission.

Why Are Virtual Power Plants Important?

Texas, Freedom Solar’s home state, is a leader in VPPs, notably following the catastrophic Winter Storm Uri in 2021, which highlighted the need for innovations to enhance grid resilience and protect residents from outages.

VPPs serve as a vital solution, reducing strain on the grid and ensuring power availability even during outages. They eliminate the need for costly transmission lines while decreasing carbon emissions and lowering energy costs.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas has initiated two virtual power plants as part of a pilot project focused on distributed energy resources.

We are now collaborating with Tesla Electric to advance this initiative to the next level.

What Is The Tesla Virtual Power Plant Program?

Freedom Solar is helping homeowners with solar and storage systems enroll in Tesla’s VPP program, allowing them to earn money by selling energy back to the grid. Participants can receive $400 annually for each enrolled Powerwall, along with additional credits based on the energy they sell.

This program empowers homeowners to manage their energy usage, storage, and sales while helping ensure they stay protected from blackouts.

What’s Next?

Across Texas and the nation, power grids are increasingly strained during periods of extreme weather. This demand is expected to rise sharply in the coming years, and states must leverage solutions that enhance safety, alleviate pressure on the grid, and deliver reliable electricity when it is most needed.
