A new parking structure integrated with solar panels is playing a pivotal role in helping TGS, an oil and gas company, meet its sustainability targets.
Commitment to Sustainability
Houston-based TGS specializes in providing energy data and intelligence to clients around the globe. In 2021, the company set an ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, focusing on reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions. These categories encompass direct emissions from operations at the company headquarters and indirect emissions resulting from purchased electricity. In a region like Houston, which predominantly relies on nonrenewable energy sources, this goal is particularly challenging.
To further its commitment to sustainability, TGS decided to transition its headquarters to solar energy. The facilities team identified a solar canopy for the employee parking lot as an effective solution that would not only provide relief from the Texas heat but also significantly contribute toward achieving their net-zero objective.
After evaluating several solar companies, TGS chose to partner with Freedom Solar. Together, they collaborated with the city of Houston and the building manager to design and install a solar parking structure that adhered to local regulations while maximizing energy output.
Insights from the TGS Team
Mary Ann Bordes, TGS’s Director of Facilities and Administration, praised the collaboration: “The Freedom team effectively navigated the relationships between the landlord and the city, demonstrating a clear understanding of that triangular partnership.”
The solar installation is projected to generate approximately 901,710 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy annually—roughly 60% of the Houston facility’s energy needs. This initiative is expected to reduce TGS’s global CO2 emissions by 30%, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts.
Bordes emphasized the exceptional communication and coordination throughout the project, stating, “I would rate the installation a 10 out of 10.”
Financial and Environmental Benefits
TGS CEO Kristian Johansen highlighted the dual advantages of the solar initiative. “Solar will yield cost savings for TGS as it produces energy annually,” he explained. “We’re thrilled to offer a solution that not only fulfills our employees’ demand for covered parking but also aligns with our net-zero goals.”
The solar parking structure is designed for longevity, expected to generate clean energy for over 25 years while contributing to a more stable and resilient electricity grid in Texas.
