The solar market in New Braunfels is set to experience a substantial increase in installations following the launch of a new program, according to a leading figure in the solar industry.
Bret Biggart, CEO of Austin-based Freedom Solar Power, notes that Austin and San Antonio are currently the dominant markets for solar in Texas. In contrast, New Braunfels has been relatively “sleepy,” with fewer installations compared to these more active solar markets.
However, Biggart believes this will change with the new Participating Solar Contractor Program introduced by New Braunfels Utilities (NBU). This program aims to help more customers qualify for solar rebates and is designed to “revolutionize the way individuals and businesses harness solar energy in our region,” as stated in an NBU press release on March 1.
Biggart predicts that NBU’s new initiative could significantly boost solar adoption in New Braunfels. “These programs really begin to move the needle,” he said. “We’ve seen this occur in other markets, and I expect a similar trend in New Braunfels.”
Since 2016, NBU has provided a rebate of up to $3,000 to incentivize rooftop solar installations within its distribution area. Previously, customers faced strict requirements to ensure the efficiency of their systems for rebate qualification. However, under the new two-tiered rebate structure, customers with less efficient systems may now receive up to $1,000.
The program also offers dedicated staff and resources, along with a list of NBU-qualified solar contractors to assist customers interested in making the switch to solar energy.
In its 17 years of operation, Freedom Solar has completed 125 solar projects in New Braunfels. Since the program launched, Biggart reports seeing “almost 2,000 leads” from the area.
The growing interest in solar is driven, in part, by extreme weather events like Winter Storm Uri, which has shifted homeowner perspectives on energy independence and security.
“With all the climate-related threats we’re facing today, people are realizing they need a way to feel secure if the grid goes down, and this is prompting the increase in adoption,” Biggart explained.
Currently, there are 1,036 homes in New Braunfels with solar rooftops. Should the program gain momentum, Biggart estimates that New Braunfels could make up 10% of Freedom Solar’s residential market, translating to a potential $300 million annual revenue stream.
“While the largest markets remain Austin and San Antonio, we see ourselves as a Texas company deeply invested in the local community,” he added. “Ultimately, we aim to service everyone in Texas who can benefit from solar energy.”
