SMART Source Solar PV Program

The process begins with a site assessment, where a certified installer evaluates your home to determine its solar potential and recommend the optimal system size. After the assessment, the installer will manage the necessary permitting and paperwork for project approval.
Who Is Eligible for the Program?
To qualify for SECO Energy’s program, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a residential or commercial customer of SECO Energy.
- Ensure your solar PV system complies with all relevant safety and technical standards.

Interconnection for Net Metering

Customers will be billed for all energy consumed while receiving credits for any surplus energy sent back to the grid, based on SECO Energy’s standard rates for purchases at Avoided Cost.
Does AEP Offer Net Metering?
Yes, the SMART Source Solar PV Program includes SECO Energy’s Distributed Renewable Generation or net metering option. Once your solar installation is complete, it will connect to the SECO Energy grid, allowing you to use the solar power generated to offset your electricity consumption. Any excess energy produced can earn you credits on your utility bill.
As a transmission and distribution utility (TDU), SECO manages the metering system, recording electricity inflows and outflows.
Interconnection Process
Once you submit all required documentation, pay the necessary fees, and sign your application, SECO Energy will conduct a technical review. They will perform a technical analysis and then issue an Interconnection Service Agreement (ISA).
Once you sign the ISA and pay for the interconnection equipment, you can begin construction as long as your project remains unchanged. After installation and any necessary upgrades, SECO will conduct testing and commissioning. When completed, you’ll receive a Permission to Operate letter from SECO Energy.
